Cinderfella (1960)Anna's character: Princess Charmein ....This simply-told tale lards over the fairy story with un-needed songs and production numbers, but the basic story is still the same, only switched to a male Cinderella. Lewis is Fella, a put-upon flunky to a mean and rich dowager (Judith Anderson) and her three surly sons (all of whom appear to be pushing fifty). Fella falls for the beautiful princess (Anna Maria Alberghetti) and with the assistance of his screwy fairy godfather (Ed Wynn) gets transformed into a pre-Buddy Love lounge lizard who sweeps the Princess off her feet as he struts down an ornate stairway to the beat of The Count Basie Orchestra, leaving his stepbrothers with their mouths agape. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

The Last Command (1955)
Synopsis: A vigorously performed spectacular about The Alamo although, like most Hollywood history, it plays flagrantly fast and loose with the facts - and thereby hangs a tale, 'tis said. John Wayne always wanted to produce and to star (as Davy Crockett) in an historically accurate film about the battle of the Alamo but his then studio, Republic - cheap in character as well as in pocket - turned him down. The Davy Crockett craze, generated by the Disney film, was in full cry at the time, and the studio probably figured it should cash in on it 100% instead of sharing the takings with an independent producer. It was probably one of the key reasons why Wayne went thereafter to big studios - Warner, United Artists, RKO, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Paramount) The opportunistic Republic version of the Battle of he Alamo, starring Sterling Hayden as Davy Crockett - another particularly dirty trick, since Hayden, a genuine tough guy (albeit an intellectual one) was the only Hollywood star who could seriously compete with Wayne in terms of '"knock 'em down drag 'em out " he-man appeal - earned the studio money (it is a fair-to-good movie) but in losing one of Hollywood's greatest-ever bax-office names it lost far more. "The Last Command" was one of the final nails in the coffin the studio, headed by the tight-fisted Herbert Yates, was making for itself.
The Stars Are Singing 1953Starring
SYNOPSIS: Fifteen-year-old Katri Walenska (Amma Maria Alberghetti) jumps a Polish ship, swims ashore and enters New York illegally. The United States Immigration officials are alerted---the USA still had a functioning immigration policy and department when this was filmed---and the search is on. Katri's only possessions are a ten-dollar bill and a letter to her parents' old friend, Jan Poldi (Lauritz Melchior), a former Metropolitan Opera star. She finds him in a shabby Greenwich Village apartment. His neighbors in the apartment house are three Broadway hopefuls; pop singer Terry Brennan (Rosemary Clooney), hoofer Buddy Fraser (Tom Morton) and Homer Tirdell (Bob Williams) and his talented dog Red Dust. (Pardon me, make that four Broadway hopefuls counting the dog.) When Terry hears Katri's magnificent singing voice, she scurries around New York to get her an audition and succeeds in getting her a spot on Don Wilson's televised amatuer hour. She wins the contest but unwittingly reveals her true identity as an illegal alien, which causes the arrest of Poldi, Wilson and Dave (John Archer), Terry's lawyer boyfriend. Katri faces deportation. Menotti's first international success, "The Medium" is a tragedy in two acts for five singers, a dance-mime role, and a chamber opera for thirteen instruments and fourteen players: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, percussion, piano (4 hands), and string quintet.
